Ethereal Splendor from Colony Media

After following a trail of retweets Mario Cavalli showed up on my radar. Wow, how come I’ve never heard of this guy before?

Based in the UK, Mario creates visual texturescapes that are quite mesmerizing.

In 2001 he founded Colony Media, which represents a group of directors that seem to share a similar artistic philosophy. The group includes Dave McKean, whom I’ve been a big fan of since his days in comics. It’s interesting to see how his work has evolved with the added dimensions of motion and sound.

Side note: Years ago when McKean did some work for my magazine, I sent him some of the fonts that I created. They continue to show up in his work from time to time, which is always fun for me to discover.

Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Mutability” Reimagined

Motion graphic artist Sebastain Lange collaborates with musician Forss to create a freestyle-jazz typographic expression of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Mutability”. It’s a great example of how, with motion, you can activate an emotive quality in a typeface known for being emotionally challenged.

The Crisis of Credit Visualized

The Twitterverse was all abuzz yesterday with this beautifully designed and executed video that visualizes the current credit crisis. The video, developed as part of a grad student’s thesis, breaks the complexity of this “situation” down to a simple narrative with illuminating visuals.

Some are criticizing this for over-simplifying things and are drawing comparisons to how the media dumbs-down the news into spoon-fed sound bytes. I’m not informed enough to make a judgment there. But either way this is an excellent example of how to present a complex issue in an entertaining way.

Pretty Loaded

imageBig Spaceship is curating a site where agencies (or anyone) can submit Flash pre-loaders. It’s quite fun and hypnotizing to watch as each pre-loader loads the next. See if you can guess the brand or the client without looking in the bottom left. Pretty cool. http://www.prettyloaded.com/
