Get Microsoft Silverlight

Great presentation here from Bill Buxton, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. This was from Mix 09 a few weeks back. Silverlight is needed to view.

Bill does a great job articulating the value of experience in the context of design. Like myself, he’s also really big on the value and role of sketching during the design process. He’s even written a book about it.

Allegedly, he’s been brought on to Microsoft to elevate the role of design in the company culture. I have yet to ping a few of my old Microsoft clients to hear their take on this.

The presentation is 20 minutes, but well worth it.

I checked out a few minutes of Scott Guthrie’s presentation which immediately follows. There was a demo of Microsoft’s Expression Web SuperPreview  - which had some cool features for cross-browser programming.

As an aside, I love how Bill’s site is completely, and I’m sure intentionally, stripped-down.

Saw Bill present live in Princeton last week—he was really stand-out.  Rarely do I leave a presentation with “maxims that stick.”  Yet, after watching his presentation, I’ve already brought many of his views and perspectives to my work.

One of the stickiest maxim was: “The experience is in the transition between states, not the states themselves.”

Another one was “Engineers who dabble in design are just as annoying as designers who dabble in engineering.”

Bravo!

Yes, his was of articulating the experience as the transition was very simple and compelling. He’s definitely a great presenter.

The jury is still out on whether or not people like him can make a real impact in the dominant tech culture at Microsoft. With the iPhone rapidly setting the new standards in mobile devices, it’s embarrassing to see Microsoft have their Windows Mobile efforts operating separately from their Zune efforts. That’s not even taking into account how anti-climatic the latest Windows Mobile release is.

They muscled past Sony in the game console market, but I think that Apple has leap-froged them in the mobile space. Will they be able to catch up?
